The Moomin Museum was originally opened to the public in 1987 as part of Tampere Art Museum's Moominvalley collection, which was built on donations from Tove Jansson and her close collaborators between 1986 and 1997.
Initially located in the Metso Main Library's basement for 25 years, the museum moved temporarily to the Tampere Art Museum's ground floor during renovations from 2013 to 2016.
In 2017, it found a permanent home in Tampere-talo with a renewed exhibition space.
The museum's collection includes original artworks, detailed dioramas, and the famous Moominhouse model, which was created between 1976 and 1979 and has been exhibited internationally before settling permanently in Tampere.
