Valkmusa National Park, located in the Kymenlaakso region of Finland, was established in 1996 and spans approximately 19.5 square kilometers, with 87% of its area covered by swamp land. It represents an exceptionally diverse array of southern Finnish swamp types, with over 40 categorized swamp types including valuable forest islands and edge forests. The park consists of two separate areas: the western part features Munasuo, Finland's largest and most valuable aapa mire, while the eastern part includes Valkmusa, Kananiemensuo, Lamminsuo, and Mustanjärvensuo, with the latter being a well-developed string bog. The park's forests are mainly fresh blueberry-type and dry lingonberry-type heath forests, with birch-dominated woods in the northeast. Valkmusa is notable for its rich birdlife, combining abundant southern species with northern species such as the willow grouse and rustic bunting, and serves as an important resting place for migratory birds. The park also hosts a remarkable butterfly fauna, including several endangered species, with the symbol species being the endangered moth Idaea muricata. Visitors can explore two marked trails: a 2.3 km boardwalk loop with a birdwatching tower accessible from Simonsaari parking, and a 2 km path leading to the Moronvuori day cottage in the eastern part. The park's unique combination of swamp habitats and diverse fauna makes it a special destination for nature enthusiasts.

Histoire

1996

Valkmusa National Park was founded in 1996 to protect one of southern Finland's most representative swamp landscapes.

Historically, the area has been subject to forestry, with much of the current forest being relatively young due to previous logging activities before the park's establishment.

The park encompasses two main swamp areas: Munasuo in the west, known as Finland's largest aapa mire, and the eastern swamp complexes including the well-developed string bog Mustanjärvensuo.

The park's boundaries touch the Kymi River's Hirvikoski branch to the north, and parts of the eastern swamp areas are adjacent to Finnish Defence Forces' land.

Since its establishment, Valkmusa has become a key site for conserving diverse swamp ecosystems and the associated flora and fauna.
