Lappeenranta Fortress is a historic fortification located in the city of Lappeenranta, Finland, originally constructed by the Swedes starting in 1649 and later expanded by the Russians. Situated strategically at a key land and water traffic junction, the fortress played a vital role in regional defense and border control. Its construction was initiated after the founding of Lappeenranta, with significant building phases occurring between 1722 and 1728 under the guidance of military engineers such as Jacob Johan Faber. The fortress witnessed key historical events, including the Battle of Lappeenranta in 1741 during the Hats' War, where Swedish and Russian forces clashed. Under Russian rule, the fortress's defenses were upgraded, and notable structures such as the Church of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, Finland's oldest Orthodox church completed in 1785, were built. The fortress area also served as a notorious prison camp after the Finnish Civil War, known for harsh conditions and executions. Today, the fortress is a nationally significant cultural environment featuring museums like the South Karelia Museum and the Cavalry Museum, art galleries, event spaces, and cafes.
