Histoire

1878

Viljandi Museum originated from archaeological excavations conducted in 1878–1879 in the ruins of Viljandi Castle.

1881

In 1881, the Viljandi Literary Society was established to oversee these excavations and later became the museum's custodian.

1936

The modern museum was officially founded in 1936 by the Viljandi Local History Society, with its current building acquired in 1942.

During the Soviet era, it was known as the Viljandi Interdistrict Local History Museum.

2024

In late 2024, the Estonian Ministry of Culture decided to establish the Viljandi Museum Foundation to take over the institution's functions, with Anu Rannu appointed as director starting May 2025, succeeding Jaak Pihlak who led the museum for over 33 years.
