Egeskov Castle, located in Southern Denmark on the island of Funen, is a remarkable Renaissance water castle built in 1554 by Frands Brockenhuus. It is famed for being one of Europe's best-preserved moated castles, constructed on oak piles in a small lake with a maximum depth of about five meters. The castle's design features two longhouses connected by a thick double wall, allowing defenders to retreat from one house to the other during sieges. Its defensive architecture includes numerous shooting slits and a drawbridge as the sole entrance. The castle has 66 rooms, 200 windows with over 2,000 individual panes, and around 60 shooting slits, some now bricked up. Over centuries, it passed through several noble families, including the Skinkel and Bille-Brahe families. In the late 19th century, Julius Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille modernized the castle, adding features such as a port building, raised tower roofs, and modern utilities like electricity and a private railway. Surrounding the castle is a historic park of about 20 hectares, featuring clipped hedges dating back to 1730 and a unique fuchsia garden with plants aged between 40 and 60 years. Today, Egeskov Castle is a popular tourist attraction offering access to the restored Knight's Hall, agricultural museums in the adjacent thatched timber Ladegården, and beautifully maintained gardens. The castle's blend of military architecture, Renaissance aesthetics, and lush grounds make it a unique cultural heritage site and a captivating destination for visitors.
