Histoire
Commissioned by Bishop Bernward around 1010, St.
Michael's Church was dedicated in 1022 shortly before his death.
His successor, Bishop Godehard, completed and reconsecrated the church in 1031.
The church was part of a Benedictine monastery complex and underwent reconstruction after a fire in 1186.
During the Reformation circa 1542, Lutheran Protestants gained control of much of the church, altering its administration.
The church suffered severe damage during a British air raid in 1945 but was restored between 1950 and 1957 to closely resemble its original Romanesque form.
