Gendarmenmarkt is a renowned historic square in Berlin, celebrated for its architectural ensemble comprising the French Church (Französischer Dom), the German Church (Deutscher Dom), and the Konzerthaus Berlin concert hall. Originally established in 1688 as the Linden-Markt during Berlin's western expansion, the square was redesigned in the 18th century and named after the Prussian Gendarmen regiment. The French Church, built by the Huguenot community between 1701 and 1705, features a viewing platform, a restaurant, and a Huguenot museum, with its tower added in 1785. The German Church, designed by Martin Grünberg and completed in 1708, was rebuilt after WWII and now houses a museum of German history. The Konzerthaus, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and completed in 1821 on the site of a former theatre, serves as a concert hall and is home to the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. The square is also famous for its monumental statue of poet Friedrich Schiller and hosts one of Berlin's most popular Christmas markets, making it a vibrant cultural hub.
