Český Šternberk Castle (Hrad Český Šternberk)
Olomoucký kraj
Český Šternberk Castle (Hrad Český Šternberk) is a mid-13th-century early Gothic castle dramatically set on a steep granite cliff above the Sázava River, overlooking the market town of Český Šternberk in Central Bohemia. Founded in 1241, it is notable for being constructed, named, and historically associated with the same noble family, the House of Sternberg. Although the castle began as a Gothic stronghold, later rebuilding and fortification phases partly concealed some original Gothic features. Many interiors were reshaped in Baroque and Rococo styles, giving the visitor a layered sense of architectural history. Among the highlights is elaborate stucco and interior rendering work carried out in 1760 by the master Carlo Brentano. The castle is also known for a rare collection of 545 copper engravings depicting the entire history of the Thirty Years’ War. Visitors can additionally see displays of historical weapons and hunting trophies in the castle’s halls. Today the castle functions as a residence with a long architectural and historical heritage and is open to the public as a major tourist destination. It is often regarded as one of the best preserved Gothic castles in Bohemia.

Because the site is a popular attraction and the visit focuses on historic interiors and collections, consider planning your arrival earlier in the day to avoid peak crowds. The castle stands on a steep rocky position above the river, so allow extra time for the approach and wear stable footwear, especially in wet or icy weather.

Histoire
The castle was built in 1241 by the Bohemian nobleman Zdeslav z Divišova (later known as Zdeslav of Sternberg).
In the 14th century, changing warfare and the rise of long-range firearms prompted reinforcement of the defenses, including a three-story northern tower linked by a rampart.
In 1467 it was seized by the royal armies of George of Poděbrady, and by the turn of the 15th to 16th century it was reconstructed and expanded, including a new southern cylindrical tower and a northern “Dungeon.” It survived looting in 1627 during the Thirty Years’ War.
After periods of changing ownership, it returned to the Sternberg family in 1841, was nationalized in 1949, and was restituted to the family in 1992; after Count Zdeněk Sternberg’s death in 2021, it has been administered by his son Filip Sternberg.
