Broumov Monastery (Broumovský klášter)
Královéhradecký kraj
The Broumov Monastery stands as a prominent national cultural monument in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. This impressive Benedictine complex dominates the historic town of Broumov, which is well-preserved as an urban monument zone. Originally the site of a local castle, the structure was extensively rebuilt and expanded into a fortified monastery complex starting in 1305. It includes the notable Church of Saint Adalbert within its grounds. Throughout the centuries, the monastery served as the administrative center for the abbatial estates and played a crucial role in the region's development. It maintained strong ties with the Břevnov Monastery in Prague, shaping the cultural and spiritual landscape of the Broumov Highlands. Today, it remains a testament to the enduring legacy of the Benedictine order in Bohemia.

Histoire
The history of the monastery dates back to 1213 when King Ottokar I granted the remote Broumov area to the Benedictine monks of Břevnov Monastery.
In 1305 and the following years, an abbot transformed the existing local castle into a fortified monastery complex.
The site gained immense significance during the Hussite Wars in 1420, when monks fleeing from the Břevnov Monastery sought refuge behind its walls.
Despite being besieged by Hussites, the fortified town and monastery were never conquered.
Between 1663 and 1738, the abbots successfully guided the estate to economic prosperity, recovering from the damages of the Thirty Years' War.
