Ratibořice Chateau (Zámek Ratibořice)
Královéhradecký kraj
Ratibořice Chateau is a prominent historical and cultural landmark situated in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. Nestled on an elevated plain above the meandering Úpa river, the estate is the centerpiece of the renowned Babiččino údolí (Grandmother's Valley). Originally built as a Baroque summer palace in the style of an Italian country villa, the chateau later acquired its current elegant late Classical and Empire appearance. The building features a unique slightly rhomboid ground-plan, a hipped roof with six chimneys, and a spacious natural landscape park. The chateau holds a special place in Czech culture as the real-life setting that inspired Božena Němcová's beloved novel, 'Babička' (The Grandmother). The estate's most famous resident, Kateřina Frederika Benigna, Duchess of Zaháň, served as the direct inspiration for the novel's 'lady princess'. Beyond its literary fame, the residence was a hub for European high society and diplomacy in the early 19th century. Today, the chateau and its surrounding valley rank among the most frequented and beloved tourist destinations in East Bohemia. Visitors are drawn to the perfect blend of architectural beauty, rich history, and the romantic Bohemian landscape.

Histoire
The site originally housed a medieval knights' stronghold mentioned in 1388, which eventually fell into ruin by the late 16th century.
After the Battle of White Mountain, the confiscated estate was given to the Italian noble Ottavio Piccolomini by Emperor Ferdinand II.
Between 1702 and 1708, Lorenzo Piccolomini constructed a Baroque summer palace on the grounds for hunting and summer retreats.
In 1792, the estate was purchased by Peter von Biron, Duke of Courland, and later inherited by his daughter, Kateřina Frederika Benigna.
Under her ownership, the chateau hosted crucial diplomatic negotiations between Austrian Chancellor Metternich and Russian and Prussian representatives to form an alliance against Napoleon.
The building received its current Classical and Empire style during a major reconstruction from 1825 to 1826.
