INBioparque
Heredia
INBioparque is a natural park located in Santo Domingo, Heredia, Costa Rica, established by the Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio). The park serves as an educational and recreational space designed to bring families and visitors closer to Costa Rica's vast natural heritage. INBio, founded in the late 1980s, is a private institution that collaborates with government agencies, universities, and the private sector to inventory and conserve the country's biodiversity. INBioparque reflects this mission by offering visitors immersive experiences in Costa Rican ecosystems, highlighting the importance of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources. The park complements INBio's extensive scientific work, which includes a collection of over three million specimens cataloged in a public database called Atta. INBioparque opened in 2000 and plays a key role in environmental education, aiming to foster appreciation and understanding of biodiversity among the public. The park is situated about 85 km northeast of San José, making it accessible for both locals and tourists interested in nature and conservation. INBioparque exemplifies Costa Rica's commitment to preserving its natural environment while promoting scientific research and community engagement.

Histoire
INBio was established in 1989 by a group of scientists and entrepreneurs aiming to study and conserve Costa Rica's biodiversity, as the government lacked resources to create such an institution.
The institute quickly gained recognition for its scientific contributions and environmental advocacy.
In 1995, INBio received the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research.
Over the years, INBio expanded its activities to include bio-prospecting, educational outreach, and the creation of INBioparque, which opened in 2000 as a public space to promote biodiversity awareness.
In 2015, due to financial challenges, INBio transferred its extensive biodiversity collection and database to the Costa Rican government, transitioning into a think tank while INBioparque moved under government operation.
