Histoire

1086

Originally known as Zhenfengli during the Spring and Autumn period, Zhouzhuang was renamed after being donated to the Quanfu Temple by Zhou Digong in 1086 during the Northern Song dynasty.

The town flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties, developing its distinctive waterways and architecture.

Over centuries, Zhouzhuang has maintained its cultural significance and architectural heritage, surviving as a well-preserved example of traditional Jiangnan water towns.

It gained national recognition as an AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration.

Double Bridges (Shuang Qiao)1573–1619

Comprising Shide Bridge and Yongan Bridge, these intersecting stone bridges are the symbol of Zhouzhuang. Built during the Ming dynasty's Wanli era, Shide Bridge features a round arch and runs east-west, while Yongan Bridge has a square arch running north-south. Together, they cross two rivers and form a shape reminiscent of an ancient Chinese key.

Shenting House1742

Built in 1742, this Qing dynasty residential complex belonged to the descendants of Shen Wansan, the first millionaire of Jiangnan. It spans over 2,000 square meters with more than 100 rooms divided into three sections: the water gate and wharf, the gate tower with tearoom and main hall, and the two-storied dwelling. The house exhibits exquisite bricky gate carvings and houses cultural relics including ancient folk instruments.

Chengxu Taoist Temple1086–1093

Located on Zhongshi Street, this Taoist temple was constructed between 1086 and 1093 during the Song dynasty. Known as Sanctity Hall, it has undergone expansions and is one of the most famous Taoist temples in the Wuzhong region. The temple complex includes halls and pavilions dedicated to various Taoist deities.

Fuan Bridge1355

Built in 1355 during the Yuan dynasty, Fuan Bridge is notable for its combination of a single-arch bridge with bridge towers. It is located at the eastern end of Zhongshi Street and represents unique Yuan dynasty bridge architecture.

Zhangting House1436–1449

Constructed during the Ming dynasty's Zhengtong era and later owned by the Zhang family in the Qing dynasty, Zhangting House is a graceful residential house with over 70 rooms. It features a tranquil courtyard and pond with the Ruojing River flowing through, offering insight into traditional lifestyle.
