The Hong Kong Museum of History, located in Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon, is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Hong Kong's historical and cultural heritage. Established in 1975 after splitting from the City Museum and Art Gallery, it has evolved through several locations before settling in its current purpose-built venue next to the Hong Kong Science Museum in 1998. The museum features extensive collections covering natural history, archaeology, ethnography, and local history. Its main permanent exhibition, "The Hong Kong Story," originally opened in 2001 and after a major renovation reopening in 2026, now presents ten galleries under four thematic areas: "Roots of Culture," "East meets West," "Coalition against Japanese Aggression," and "Hong Kong as a Global Metropolis." This updated exhibition uses advanced interactive technology and immersive historical scenes to narrate Hong Kong's evolution from prehistoric times to the 21st century, emphasizing the city's resilience and deep connections to China. Additionally, the "Multifaceted Hong Kong" series opened in 2024, explores community histories including the Yau Tsim Mong District and the Hong Kong Portuguese community. The museum also manages five branch museums that focus on various aspects of Hong Kong's heritage. It is accessible by walking from Hung Hom or East Tsim Sha Tsui MTR stations, making it a key cultural destination for both locals and tourists.
