The park began operations in 1996 and was officially recognized by the Hainan provincial government as a geological park in 2002.
In 2004, it was designated as the Hainan Shishan Volcanic Cluster National Geopark by China's Ministry of Land and Resources.
Subsequently, in 2006, UNESCO's Geopark Executive Board approved its status as the Leiqiong Global Geopark.
