Beijing Shi
The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing is a premier national-level performing arts venue located adjacent to the Great Hall of the People. Designed by French architect Paul Andreu, it opened in 2007 after decades of planning and construction delays. The iconic ellipsoid dome clad in titanium and glass rises above a large artificial lake, creating a striking visual landmark. Inside, the complex houses multiple performance venues, including an opera house with over 2,000 seats, a music hall, drama theater, and a small theater for more intimate performances. The NCPA Orchestra, founded in 2010, serves as the resident orchestra, performing a wide repertoire including Western operas and Chinese works. The center is a hub for original productions and cultural events, showcasing a blend of traditional Chinese and international performing arts. Its underground design integrates modern technology and accessibility, with connections to Beijing’s subway system. The NCPA stands as a symbol of China’s cultural development and artistic ambition in the 21st century.

Construction was delayed for decades due to economic and logistical challenges, particularly related to the adjacent Great Hall of the People.
The project was revived in the 1990s, officially approved in 1996, and construction began in 2001.
The design by Paul Andreu was selected in 1999.
The center was completed in 2007 and officially opened the same year.
