Mefou National Park
Centre
Mefou National Park, also known as Parc de la Méfou, is a primate sanctuary located in the forested area of Mfou in Cameroon. It serves as a shelter for native African primates including various Old World monkeys, chimpanzees, and Western lowland gorillas. The sanctuary was established by Ape Action Africa to provide refuge for primates rescued from illegal pet trade and bushmeat hunting, initially housing animals from the Mvog-Betsi Zoo in Yaoundé. The park plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, rehabilitation, and education about primate protection. Visitors can experience guided tours that offer insight into the sanctuary's work and the primates' natural behaviors. The sanctuary is a unique blend of wildlife preservation and active rescue operations, making it an important ecological and educational site in Cameroon. Its forested environment provides a natural habitat-like setting for the primates, enhancing their welfare and rehabilitation. Mefou National Park also engages the public through sponsorship programs and donations to support its mission. Open only on weekends with prior booking, it offers a rare opportunity to witness conservation in action and support endangered species.

Over time, the sanctuary expanded its role to actively protect and rehabilitate various endangered primates including chimpanzees and gorillas.
In 2010, the sanctuary's director, Colonel Avi Sivan, tragically died in a helicopter crash, marking a significant moment in the park's history.
