Histoire
The idea for Teatro del Lago originated after the Hotel Frutillar, the previous venue for the Semanas Musicales de Frutillar festival, burned down in 1996.
Businessman Guillermo Schiess initiated the project in 1998 to provide a new cultural home for the festival.
The initial architectural design by Gerardo Köster and Gustavo Greene aimed to accommodate symphony orchestra concerts but was later modified to also host operas.
Construction was delayed due to the 1997 Asian financial crisis affecting funding.
In 2008, the Amercanda architectural firm joined the project to improve acoustic and thermal insulation.
The theatre was finally inaugurated on November 6, 2010, becoming the largest concert hall built in Chile since the 1950s.
