Engelberg Abbey
Obwalden
Engelberg Abbey, founded in 1120 by Count Conrad of Sellenbüren, is a Benedictine monastery located in the canton of Obwalden, Switzerland. It holds a commanding position at the head of the Nidwalden Valley and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels. The abbey was originally under the Diocese of Constance and now belongs to the Diocese of Chur. It has a rich spiritual and temporal history, once exercising quasi-episcopal jurisdiction and ruling over numerous towns and villages until the French Revolution. The abbey buildings, largely rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1729, showcase substantial baroque architecture and house the largest organ in Switzerland, with 137 registers on four manuals and pedal. Historically, the abbey was a double monastery with both monks and nuns, with the nuns relocating to Sarnen in 1615. The abbey has been a center of learning and culture, with a scriptorium founded in the 12th century and a library that once contained over twenty thousand volumes. It also operates a boarding school and hosts public church services and cultural events. Engelberg Abbey continues to be a spiritual and cultural landmark, blending centuries of monastic tradition with community engagement.
