History
The origins of Bürgenstock Resort date back to 1871 when entrepreneurs Franz Josef Bucher and Josef Durrer purchased Alp Tritt on the Bürgenberg and opened the Grand Hotel in 1873 under the name Hotel Kurhaus.
They innovated early by building a hydroelectric plant to power the funicular connecting the resort to Lake Lucerne, which began operation in 1888.
Over the following decades, the resort expanded with the addition of the Park Hotel, Palace Hotel, villas, and the Hammetschwand Lift in 1905.
Ownership changed hands several times, including acquisition by Friedrich Frey-Fürst in 1925 and later by major Swiss bank UBS in 1996.
Since 2007, the resort has been owned by Katara Hospitality, a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority.
A significant renovation and modernization project took place between 2014 and 2017 to preserve the resort's cultural heritage while upgrading facilities to modern luxury standards.
