Bains des Pâquis is a historic public bath complex located on the shores of Lake Geneva in the Les Pâquis district of Geneva, Switzerland. Established originally in 1872 as wooden baths, the site evolved into a municipal bathing facility by 1890. The current Bauhaus-style concrete and glass structure was built in 1932, designed by engineer Louis Arnichard and architect Henry Roche. It serves as a popular local spot for swimming, sauna, Turkish baths, and massages, as well as a venue for cultural activities like festivals, concerts, and exhibitions. The baths are managed by the Association des Usagers de Bains des Pâquis (AUBP), a users' association that successfully campaigned to preserve and renovate the baths in the late 20th century. Open year-round, the site offers a welcoming atmosphere with amenities including a sauna, hammam, and massage services provided by professional masseurs. Its location on the lakefront provides visitors with picturesque views and a unique urban wellness experience. Bains des Pâquis is recognized as a cultural heritage site of regional significance and remains a vibrant community landmark in Geneva.

Histoire

1872

The first baths at Bains des Pâquis were constructed in 1872 as wooden structures near the harbor mole and became municipal baths in 1890.

1932

In 1932, the old baths were replaced by a modernist Bauhaus-style facility made of reinforced concrete and glass, designed by Louis Arnichard and Henry Roche.

1987

In the late 1980s, plans for extensive reconstruction triggered community protests, leading to the formation of the Association des Usagers de Bains des Pâquis (AUBP) in 1987 to preserve the site.

1988

Following a referendum in 1988 rejecting reconstruction plans, the baths were renovated between 1991 and 1995 with repairs focused on structural pillars.

Since then, the AUBP has managed the baths, expanding services and cultural programming, and opening the facility year-round.
