Buddha Dordenma is an immense Shakyamuni Buddha statue located in the mountains overlooking Thimphu, Bhutan's capital. Standing 54 meters (177 feet) tall, it is one of the largest Buddha stupas worldwide. The statue contains over 100,000 smaller gilded bronze Buddha statues, each intricately crafted. Constructed between 2006 and 2015, the statue commemorates the 60th anniversary of Bhutan's fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and fulfills two ancient prophecies about a great statue bestowing peace and happiness. It is situated amidst the ruins of Kuensel Phodrang, the palace of a historic Bhutanese ruler. The surrounding Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park, opened in 2011, preserves nearly 944 acres of forest and includes outdoor gymnasiums, enhancing the visitor experience. The statue is not only a spiritual symbol but also a monumental architectural achievement involving international collaboration, including Chinese construction firms and Australian architects.
