Histoire
Originally known as Porto Rico due to its abundance of brazilwood, the area became a notorious hub for illegal slave trade in the 19th century.
Slaves were smuggled hidden among crates of guineafowl, leading to the name Porto de Galinhas (Port of Chickens) from the traffickers' code phrase "tem galinha nova no porto" meaning "there are new chickens in the port." The region was officially part of the municipality of Ipojuca, established in 1895.
From the 1990s onward, Porto de Galinhas transformed into a popular tourist destination, prompting environmental protection measures to preserve its marine ecosystems starting in 2014.
