Histoire

1999

The Dragão do Mar Center of Art and Culture was inaugurated in April 1999 during the administration of Governor Tasso Jereissati.

It was created under the leadership of Paulo Linhares, then Secretary of Culture and current President of the managing institute, as part of public cultural policies in Ceará.

1881

The center is named after Francisco José do Nascimento, known as Chico da Matilde, a jangadeiro who symbolized the abolitionist movement in Ceará by refusing to transport slaves in 1881.

Over the years, it has grown to become one of Brazil's largest cultural centers, managed by the Instituto Dragão do Mar, which also oversees several other cultural, sports, and gastronomic institutions in the state.
