The Museum of the History of Medicine in Varna, Bulgaria, is dedicated to chronicling the evolution of medicine in the Balkans from ancient times to the modern era. Housed in Bulgaria's first charity hospital building, constructed in 1868-1869 with the support of merchant Paraskeva Nikolaou and designed by architect Yanko Konstantinov, the museum offers a rich cultural and historical experience. The building itself has served various health-related functions, including a hospital, cholera isolation unit, military lazaret, and infectious disease center. Established as a museum in 1985, it features three exhibition halls displaying paleoanthropological collections, Ottoman and Renaissance medical tools, and 19th to 20th-century medical instruments and documents. The museum also includes specialized exhibits such as a dental office and pharmacy, alongside a library with over 4,000 medical books and significant paleoanthropological collections. It provides insights into the history of pharmacy, radiology, dentistry, and surgery, highlighting notable Bulgarian medical figures and the development of healthcare in the region. The complex, including a chapel dedicated to St. Prophet Elijah, is a protected cultural monument, reflecting its historical and architectural significance.
