The Varna Archaeological Museum, located in the historic city of Varna on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, is one of the country's largest and most significant museums. Founded in 1888 and housed in a Neo-Renaissance building designed by architect Petko Momchilov, the museum showcases a vast collection covering prehistoric, Thracian, Ancient Greek, Roman, medieval Bulgarian, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Bulgarian National Revival periods. Its most famous exhibit is the Gold of Varna, the oldest known gold treasure in the world, dating back to 4600-4200 BCE, displayed across three dedicated halls. The museum also manages important archaeological sites including Roman baths in Varna's center and the medieval Aladzha Monastery grotto. With over 2,150 square meters of exhibition area, a children’s study museum, library, and cultural events like the annual Varna Summer International Jazz Festival, it offers a comprehensive cultural experience that reflects the region's rich historical tapestry.
