Carmichael College
Rangpur
Carmichael College, established in 1916 in Rangpur, Bangladesh, is a prominent public higher education institution named after Lord Baron Carmichael, the first Governor of Bengal who inaugurated it. Founded through the efforts of J.N. Gupta and local benefactors, the college occupies a vast 206-acre campus featuring historic academic buildings, a large library, a Shaheed Minar commemorating the 1952 language movement martyrs, a Liberation War monument, mosques, and gymnasium facilities. It offers education in Science, Humanities, and Commerce at the higher secondary level under the Dinajpur Education Board, alongside Bachelor and Master degree programs affiliated with the National University of Bangladesh. The college is the largest by area in Bangladesh and serves over 17,700 students, including a significant female student population. Despite legislation passed to upgrade it to university status, government policy prevented this, and instead, Begum Rokeya University was established on land originally owned by Carmichael College. The institution remains a key academic and cultural landmark in Rangpur, reflecting a rich heritage and ongoing educational significance.
