The Museum of War Childhood in Sarajevo, opened in January 2017, is located in the city's historic old town. It exhibits a unique collection of personal items such as clothing pieces, toys, letters, drawings, photographs, and multimedia testimonies donated by survivors who experienced childhood during the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995. The collection originated from materials gathered since 2010 for the book "Childhood in War: Sarajevo 1992–1995" by Jasminko Halilović, whose research and the testimonies of hundreds of participants inspired the museum’s foundation. The museum not only displays these artifacts but also engages in ongoing research and educational activities to document and digitally preserve experiences of growing up in war. Its mission is to educate a broad audience about the hardships of wartime childhood and to support both individual trauma healing and collective social understanding. The museum's emblem was designed by Bosnian graphic artist Anur Hadžiomerspahić, and Bosnian tennis player Damir Džumhur, born during the war, serves as its ambassador. In 2018, the museum received the Council of Europe Museum Prize, recognizing its cultural and educational significance.

Histoire

2017

The Museum of War Childhood was established in January 2017 in Sarajevo's old town, based on materials collected since 2010 for Jasminko Halilović's 2013 book documenting childhood experiences during the Bosnian War (1992–1995).

The initiative arose from the need to preserve and share personal testimonies and artifacts that reflect the hardships faced by children during the conflict.

Since its opening, the museum has expanded its role to include research and educational outreach, contributing to trauma healing and social understanding in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina.
