Histoire

1970

Sovereign Hill was conceived in the 1960s to preserve Ballarat's historic gold rush heritage and was officially opened on 29 November 1970.

The site reconstructs Ballarat's Main Street as it appeared in the 1850s, following the destruction of the original timber buildings by fire in the 1860s.

Over the years, Sovereign Hill has expanded its cultural focus to include the Chinese community's history and indigenous Wadawurrung culture.

The museum also commemorates significant events such as the discovery of the Welcome Nugget and mining disasters through exhibits and storytelling.
