Bregenz Upper Town
Vorarlberg
Bregenz Upper Town, known locally as Oberstadt, is the historic heart of Bregenz, the capital of Austria's Vorarlberg state. Founded around 1200 by the Counts of Montfort, it is a medieval planned settlement characterized by a clear orthogonal street layout divided by the central Eponastraße axis. The area retains much of its original medieval and early modern architecture, including fortified town walls and narrow, cobbled streets forming an intimate urban space. Key landmarks include the Martinsturm, originally a Roman tower with a chapel decorated with 14th-century frescoes and topped by the largest bulb-shaped Baroque steeple in Central Europe. The Upper Town's buildings are mostly two to four stories high, constructed in a closed style with small front gardens near the walls and larger courtyards inside. Despite some 19th-century modifications, the district has preserved its medieval character, offering visitors a glimpse into Bregenz's rich history and architectural heritage. It stands as a testament to the city's strategic importance and cultural continuity through centuries.

Histoire
Bregenz Upper Town was established around 1200 by the Counts of Montfort as a fortified settlement divided into 57 hereditary farmsteads.
In 1409, the town was split between family members along the central axis of the Upper Town.
It was acquired by the Habsburgs in the 15th and 16th centuries and remained under Austrian rule with some interruptions until the 19th century.
The medieval structure largely survived due to the town walls restricting expansion and a northward shift of urban life leading to economic stagnation in the Upper Town.
The area lost its fortress status in 1798, but many original buildings and street layouts remain intact, preserving its historical character.
