Mirabell Palace and Gardens
Salzburg
Mirabell Palace, located in Salzburg, Austria, is a historic Baroque palace built around 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau as a pleasure residence for his mistress. Originally named Schloss Altenau, it was renamed Mirabell by his successor. The palace underwent a lavish Baroque reconstruction from 1721 to 1727 under architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and later received a Neoclassical makeover after a fire in 1818. Today, the palace houses municipal offices, while its Marble Hall serves as a popular concert and wedding venue. The adjoining Mirabell Gardens, designed in the late 17th century by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, feature geometrically arranged layouts, mythological statues, and a sylvan theater. The gardens gained international fame as a filming location for The Sound of Music, notably the 'Do-Re-Mi' scene. Both palace and gardens are part of Salzburg's UNESCO-listed historic center and attract numerous visitors annually for their architectural beauty and cultural significance.
