The Schafberg Cog Railway, known locally as Schafbergbahn, is a historic narrow-gauge rack railway in Austria that connects the lakeside town of St. Wolfgang with the summit of Schafberg Mountain. Opened in 1893, it is renowned as the steepest cog railway in Austria, overcoming a height difference of 1,190 meters over a 4.2 km route. The railway uses the Abt rack system and is operated with steam and diesel locomotives on a non-electrified track. Passengers enjoy breathtaking views of the Salzkammergut region and can choose to disembark at the Schafbergalm middle station or continue to the summit station near the historic Hotel Schafbergspitze. At the summit, visitors are rewarded with a 360° panorama including views of eleven lakes and the former mountain refuge Himmelspforte. The railway's infrastructure has seen extensive modernization between 2010 and 2023, including track renewal and installation of modern switch controls, ensuring safe and efficient operation. The new valley station, called ErlebnisQuartier, offers a visitor center with ticketing, a souvenir shop, a small museum featuring a historic locomotive, and a café with a lakeside terrace. The Schafberg Cog Railway combines engineering heritage with spectacular alpine scenery, making it a unique attraction in the Austrian Salzkammergut.

Histoire

1893

The Schafberg Cog Railway was inaugurated on August 1, 1893, by the Salzkammergut Local Railway Company to connect St.

Wolfgang with the summit of Schafberg Mountain.

Its origins trace back to early plans in the 1870s, but financial difficulties delayed construction.

The railway was originally built to serve the Hotel Schafbergspitze, Austria's first mountain hotel, established in the 1860s.

Over the decades, ownership changed hands, including the Austrian Transport Office and later the Austrian Federal Railways after World War II.

2010

Between 2010 and 2023, the railway underwent extensive modernization, including track renewal and installation of modern control systems, preserving its historic character while enhancing safety and reliability.
