The Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum (MEF), located in Trelew, Patagonia, Argentina, is a leading scientific and exhibition center dedicated to the paleontology of Patagonia. Named after the Italian geologist Egidio Feruglio, the museum offers a comprehensive journey through the region's natural history, displaying fossils of fauna and flora from various geological periods, starting from about 10,000 years ago to the early Paleozoic era. Its Mesozoic hall, featuring giant Patagonian dinosaurs such as the titanosaur Patagotitan mayorum-the largest dinosaur ever discovered-is a highlight attracting many visitors. The museum combines cutting-edge research with public education, showcasing a state-of-the-art fossil preparation laboratory where visitors can observe ongoing scientific work. The MEF also administers the Bryn Gwyn Geopark, a nearby natural geological reserve exhibiting fossils up to 40 million years old. Beyond exhibitions, the museum runs outreach programs including educational activities for families and schools, and special events such as overnight stays with dinosaur-themed experiences. The MEF's international reputation is reinforced by its scientific contributions and traveling exhibitions that have toured Europe and other regions worldwide. With modern facilities and engaging displays, the museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the deep past of Patagonia and the evolution of life on Earth.

Histoire

1990

The Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum opened on December 28, 1990, initially housed in a small former furniture store in Trelew with only three staff members.

1997

In 1997, plans for a new, larger building began, culminating in the reopening of the museum in its current 3,000-square-meter facility in 1999, designed by local architects.

The museum was declared of educational and cultural interest by national and local authorities in the early 2000s.

It has since become a major center for paleontological research and exhibitions, notably participating in the discovery and presentation of Patagotitan mayorum, the largest dinosaur known.

The museum continues to expand its collections and influence, both locally and internationally.
