Burj Khalifa
Dubayy
Burj Khalifa, formerly known as Burj Dubai before its inauguration, is a megatall skyscraper located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Designed by the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill with Adrian Smith as chief architect, it stands as the tallest structure in the world at a height of 828 meters (2,717 feet) including its spire. Construction began in 2004 and was completed externally by 2009, with the official opening in January 2010. The design draws inspiration from Islamic architecture, notably the Great Mosque of Samarra, featuring a Y-shaped tripartite floor plan that optimizes space for residential and hotel use. Its reinforced concrete core supports the immense height, complemented by a cladding system engineered to endure Dubai's extreme summer heat. The tower includes 57 elevators and 8 escalators, serving its mixed-use development context which encompasses homes, hotels, parks, and the Dubai Mall. Named after Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the building symbolizes Dubai's shift from an oil-based economy to one focused on tourism and services. Burj Khalifa is not only a marvel of engineering but also a cultural landmark representing Dubai's ambition and global prominence.
