La Fortaleza
Puerto Rico
La Fortaleza, also known as Palacio de Santa Catalina, is the official residence and workplace of the Governor of Puerto Rico, located in Old San Juan. Constructed between 1533 and 1540 under King Charles I of Spain, it is the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the New World. Originally built as a medieval fortress to defend San Juan Bay, it was part of a strategic defense system alongside El Morro and San Cristóbal forts. The structure features a unique blend of military architecture and neoclassical style, remodeled in 1846. The complex includes formal and private living quarters, sheltered gardens, and a swimming pool, overlooking historic city walls and the bay. La Fortaleza has witnessed multiple historic events, including three foreign captures and pivotal moments during the Spanish–American War. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, it remains a symbol of Puerto Rico's political heritage and colonial history.
