The market began in 1840 as an open-air market donated by local businessmen Josiah Barber and Richard Lord.
It evolved from the Pearl Street Market, established in 1868, to the current indoor/outdoor structure completed in 1912 after nearly a decade of planning.
Designed by the architectural firm Hubbell and Benes, the market building features Neo-Classical and Byzantine elements.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
Over the decades, the market has undergone several renovations, including major upgrades in 1953, the 1970s, and a substantial modernization in 2004.
In 2016, Sunday hours were introduced for the first time.
In 2024, management was transferred to the non-profit Cleveland Public Market Corporation, marking a new chapter in its stewardship.
