Historie
The park originated in 1902 when Dr.
Lucius B.
Morse purchased 64 acres including Chimney Rock Mountain and operated it privately for over a century.

In 2005, the North Carolina General Assembly authorized the creation of Hickory Nut Gorge State Park, later renamed Chimney Rock State Park in 2007 after the state purchased the land to prevent private development.
