The National Aquarium was conceived in the mid-1970s as part of Baltimore's Inner Harbor redevelopment, inspired by a visit to Boston's New England Aquarium.

After a successful bond referendum in 1976, construction began in 1978 on Pier 3, with the facility opening on August 8, 1981.

Though built without federal funds, the U.S.

Congress designated it the 'national aquarium' in 1979.

In 2005, the Glass Pavilion expansion opened, adding significant exhibit space.
