Historie
Originally known as Petite Anse Island, Avery Island was inhabited by Native Americans who extracted salt from its briny springs for trade.

Avery Island has survived natural disasters such as Hurricane Rita in 2005, after which extensive levee and pump systems were installed to protect the island and its operations.
