Garvan Woodland Gardens is a 210-acre botanical and woodland garden located near Hot Springs, Arkansas, owned by the University of Arkansas. Historie
The garden site was originally clear-cut around 1915 and acquired by the Arthur B.
Cook family in the 1920s.
Verna Cook Garvan, daughter of Arthur Cook and one of the first female CEOs in the southern U.S., began developing the gardens in 1956, planting thousands of specimens and personally designing the landscape.
Upon her death in 1993, she bequeathed the property to the University of Arkansas' Department of Landscape Architecture.
The gardens have since become an important center for education and research, with the Verna Cook Garvan Pavilion designed by architect Fay Jones as a centerpiece.
