History
The Diocese of Wau began as the Apostolic Prefecture of Bahr el-Ghazal in 1913, carved out from the Apostolic Vicariate of Central Africa.
It was promoted to an Apostolic Vicariate in 1917 and underwent several territorial changes over the decades, losing parts of its territory to new ecclesiastical jurisdictions.
In 1961, it was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Wau, reflecting its central church's location.
Finally, in 1974, it was elevated to the status of a diocese.
The cathedral has since been the seat of several bishops, including the first African incumbent, Bishop Ireneus Wien Dud, and the current bishop, Matthew Remijio Adam Gbitiku.
