Historie

The idea for Gamla Linköping originated in the 1940s as a response to rapid modernization that threatened historic buildings in Linköping's city center.

1944

In 1944, politician Lennart Sjöberg proposed creating an open-air museum inspired by Stockholm's Skansen.

The city council approved the concept, selecting the Valla estate as the site.

1950

Starting in 1950, buildings were carefully dismantled and moved to the museum area, with the first house inaugurated in 1952.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, most structures were relocated, establishing Gamla Linköping as a prominent cultural institution.

Over the decades, the museum has grown to include various museums, shops, and cultural activities, maintaining a vibrant historical environment.
