History
The Museu Municipal de Portalegre was founded in 1918 during Portugal's First Republic, initially operating from a room in the municipal council building with a modest collection focused on sacred art.
In 1932, it was relocated to the Church of the São Bernardo convent, which was then used as a military barracks, limiting public access.
To improve visitor experience, the museum moved in 1959 to a 16th-century noble house near the cathedral, formerly a diocesan seminary.
