Darłowo Castle, also known as the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, is the only Gothic castle located on Poland's Baltic coast in the town of Darłowo. Constructed beginning in 1352 during the reign of Bogislaw V, the castle features a nearly square layout with a prominent 24-meter-high tower. Originally a secondary residence of the House of Pomerania, it was expanded and modernized through the 15th and 16th centuries, notably under Eric of Pomerania who enhanced its defenses inspired by Kronborg Castle. The castle suffered a devastating fire in 1624, after which it was rebuilt but lost some of its original defensive features and gained a richly decorated chapel. Over the centuries, it served various roles including a warehouse, prison, hospital, and military barracks. Since 1930, it has functioned as a museum housing exhibits such as a maritime collection, baroque furniture, torture devices, Eastern art, and historical artifacts related to Darłowo and the Pomeranian duchy. Its architecture, situated on an artificial island between the Wieprza River and the Mill Canal, includes high defensive walls, two gates, and a courtyard with several historic buildings. The castle remains a significant cultural and historical landmark, offering visitors insight into medieval Pomeranian history and coastal heritage.
