Historie
Rechteren Castle was first mentioned in 1190 and originally belonged to the counts of Bentheim.
In 1315, it became property of Herman van Voorst and later passed to the van Heeckeren family, eventually the counts of Rechteren, who still own it.
In 1591, Prince Maurice of Orange ordered the dismantling of its fortifications to prevent Spanish forces from using it militarily.
The castle was expanded in the 18th century with two wings and remodeled in neogothic style in 1896.
Between 1953 and 1957, neogothic elements were removed to restore the 18th-century appearance.
During World War II, it sheltered about 60 refugees from coastal towns.
