Historie
The origins of Museum De Buitenplaats trace back to the 17th-century Nijsinghhuis, built in 1654 as the residence of the schulte of Eelde and later owned by the Nijsingh family.
In 1971, the Van Groeningen-Hazenberg couple purchased the deteriorating building and initiated extensive restoration, transforming it into a museum space.
In 1991, they founded Stichting Het Nijsinghhuis to build a museum pavilion as an alternative to a planned flat development nearby.
Supported by art historians and European Union funding, the pavilion and museum café were completed and inaugurated by Queen Beatrix in 1996.
The museum has since expanded to include a large garden and has been integrated into the Drents Museum since 2024.
