Historie

1909

The National Museum of Korea originated from the Imperial Household Museum established in 1909 by Emperor Sunjong.

Its collections were expanded through artifacts from the Japanese Government General Museum during colonial rule.

1945

After Korea's liberation in 1945, the museum was founded to consolidate these collections.

During the Korean War, artifacts were moved to Busan for safekeeping.

Post-war, the museum moved several times within Seoul, including locations at Gyeongbokgung and Deoksugung Palaces, and the former Japanese Government General Building.

2005

In 2005, it relocated to its current modern facility in Yongsan Family Park, on land returned by the US Army.

The museum's history reflects Korea's turbulent 20th century and its dedication to preserving national heritage.
