Seokguram Grotto
Gyeongsangbuk-do
Seokguram Grotto, part of the Bulguksa temple complex in Gyeongju, South Korea, is an artificial granite cave built during the Unified Silla period. Constructed between 742 and 774 under the patronage of Kim Daeseong, it is celebrated for its outstanding Buddhist sculptures, including a 3.5-meter seated Buddha on a lotus pedestal, surrounded by bodhisattvas, disciples, and Hindu deities. The grotto's architecture employs precise stone craftsmanship without mortar, using stone rivets and natural ventilation, reflecting advanced engineering concepts such as symmetry and the golden rectangle. The rotunda's dome, about 6.8 meters in diameter, is adorned with lotus motifs and half moons, enhancing its spiritual ambiance. The site symbolizes the spiritual journey to Nirvana and offers scenic views of the sunrise over the East Sea. Seokguram, designated a South Korean National Treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains a significant cultural and religious destination, embodying a unique blend of Buddhist art influenced by Indian and Hellenistic styles.
