The Zingaro Nature Reserve, established in 1981, is Sicily's first natural reserve, located along approximately seven kilometers of unspoilt coastline near San Vito Lo Capo. The reserve encompasses a diverse landscape of steep cliffs, secluded bays, and Mediterranean vegetation, hosting a remarkable variety of rare and endemic plant species, including over 670 taxa and notable lichen and moss communities. It is also a vital habitat for at least 39 bird species, particularly birds of prey such as peregrine falcons, common kestrels, and buzzards. The reserve preserves a rich archaeological heritage, including the Grotta dell'Uzzo, one of Sicily's earliest prehistoric settlements. Visitors can explore the reserve only on foot via a network of trails that connect beaches and scenic viewpoints. The area is free from roads, maintaining its natural integrity, and includes facilities such as picnic areas, shelters, and museums. The reserve also protects the adjacent marine environment along the Tyrrhenian Sea, offering crystal-clear waters and pebbled beaches accessible by footpaths. Traditional mule transport is still used within the reserve for moving goods and waste, reflecting the area's historical rural lifestyle.

Before becoming a reserve, the territory was inhabited by a farming family until around 1960, with traditional practices such as mule transport still preserved today.
