The Varaždin City Museum is housed within the historic Varaždin Fortress, a Renaissance-era water castle located on the northwestern edge of Varaždin's old town. The fortress dates back to the 12th century and was originally the seat of local prefects. It underwent significant Gothic renovations in the 14th century under the Counts of Celje and was transformed into a modern Renaissance fortification in the 16th century, featuring walls with rounded towers and a moat filled with water. The museum presents the cultural, military, and social history of Varaždin and the surrounding region, reflecting its importance as a defensive stronghold and economic center. Exhibits include artifacts from medieval times through the baroque period, emphasizing the city's architectural heritage and role in regional defense. The fortress itself is a rare example of a "wasserburg" type fortification, combining water defenses with Renaissance military architecture. Today, the museum serves as a key cultural institution preserving Varaždin's legacy, attracting visitors interested in Croatian history, art, and architecture.

Historie

The Varaždin Fortress was first mentioned in the 12th century as the seat of Varaždin prefects.

In the late 14th century, it came under the ownership of the Counts of Celje who renovated it in Gothic style, building the central quadrilateral structure.

In the 16th century, under Ivan Ungnad's ownership, the fortress was rebuilt into a Renaissance water castle with circular towers and a moat, led by architect Domenico dell'Allio.

By the end of the 16th century, it became the hereditary seat of the Erdődy family, who made baroque adaptations.

The fortress remained a key defensive and administrative site until the 20th century and is now protected as a cultural monument.
