Visovac Monastery originated in the 14th century when Augustinian hermits settled on the island following a royal donation in 1345.

In 1440, Franciscan friars from the Province of the Most Holy Redeemer took over the monastery and have remained there since.

The island was granted to the Franciscans in 1445 by Grgur Utješinović.

Over the centuries, the monastery survived regional conflicts, including the Turkish invasions in the 16th century that damaged nearby fortresses.
